“Bottom Land Bombers-Green Winged Teal!”

What was that?  Did you see them?  Where did they come from?  Many of us partaken in a flooded bottomland hunt for waterfowl as we try to blend in with the towering trees with their leaves, vines and sunken logs to hide from wary wildfowl’s incredible eyesight.  Growing up in the wilds of eastern Kansas and hunting waterfowl there and western Missouri, I’ve had my fair share of these wonderful hunts in this unique setting created from rain swollen rivers in wet years spilling out of their banks inundating the adjoining woods in the late fall.  Mostly a cold and wet occurrences they are usually highly productive for ducks as the flooded hardwood bottomlands trees are loaded with acorns, pecans and various types of seed laden vegetation floating on shallow waters available to the hungriest of migratory waterfowl.  Mallards!  The king of the waterfowl world is the most sought-after duck in the flooded bottomlands along with the handful of pintails, a few gadwall and occasional black duck.  You may even pick up your extra duck in the form of a ringneck or blackjack here.  But another type of duck, these aerial acrobats from the sky speed into your spread of fake brethren.  Sometimes you hear them but mostly just rushing in like a blurry vision of a squadron of fighter jets startling you as you try to understand what you are seeing.  Mostly hunters are hunting these woods for the green head mallards but just at home as the curl tails are the diminutive green-winged teal!  Definitely twisting and turning with the speeds unfathomable to most they maneuver through the dense timber with amazing accuracy.  Moat experienced hunters don’t find the larger ducks gliding down through tall fall trees a terribly hard target but having a flock of these little speedsters invade your decoys will bring the most challenging and humbling targets for any wing shooter! Fun past times remembered, please enjoy!
